José Antonio Quintana

Cantabria 1976

Degree in Education, Diploma in Speech Therapy and Professor of English Philology, currently the artist José Antonio Quintana combines the activity of painting with teaching. Its beginnings are framed in Graffiti and Mural Painting, but it has been around for twelve years as it focuses more on a personal studio painting.
Awarded with more than 50 national awards in these recent years, he is a material painter. His work stands out for using different kinds of "pigments" from traditional ones, helping him interpret his own reality. His works go through different moments, starting from a controlled chaos that slowly the artist is commanding. From its beginnings, his works capture figurative scenes as an excuse for the process, made by using mixed techniques, with materials such as paper, earth, pigments, iron, silver, bronze, graphite or sand that help him reflect a multitude of scenarios.
The figuration in his works have had a clear evolution to simplification, looking for the profound meaning in "less in more". All his paintings are full of details, glazes, transparencies and dynamic voids.
His works are grouped in different series ("Fields"). At the present time, the last of his series, "Backlighting Fields" have evolved towards more abstract references.
